Khang Nguyen – Lead Interpreter, AKT Translation (25+ years of conference interpreting)
Online interpreting in Vietnam means a professional interpreter delivering your meeting, conference or AGM through Zoom, Teams or Google Meet, working remotely or on site at your venue. AKT Translation has interpreted online since 2017, from HDBank's 18,000-shareholder online AGM to two-way Zoom conferences involving UNDP and FAO.

What Is Online Interpreting?
Online interpreting (also called remote interpreting) is when an interpreter delivers a meeting, conference or AGM through a video platform instead of standing or sitting next to the speaker. Listeners hear the interpretation on a dedicated language channel or through the meeting's own audio, depending on how the session is set up.
For practitioners it is not simply "normal interpreting on a screen". Without body language and the feel of the room, the interpreter works almost entirely from sound. Line quality, headsets and coordination with the organiser matter as much as language skill.
Formats of Online Interpreting
Consecutive: the speaker talks in segments and the interpreter renders each one straight after. It suits working meetings, negotiations, interviews and small seminars. It takes more time, but it is the simplest to organise because it needs only one audio line.
Simultaneous: the interpreter renders the speech almost in real time and each listener picks a language channel. It suits conferences, AGMs and larger webinars. It needs a platform with an interpretation channel, or an audio set-up tested in advance, and usually two interpreters alternating for each language pair.
Fully online or hybrid: in a fully online meeting everyone joins remotely. In a hybrid event some attendees are in the room and others are online, so the interpreter handles two audio streams. Hybrid is where problems appear most often, so it deserves the most careful testing; see more hybrid interpretation services from AKT Translation.
One-way or two-way: one-way means interpreting a talk or presentation for an audience; two-way means both sides ask and answer and the interpreter works in both directions, as in meetings with partners or authorities.
Where the interpreter sits: remotely, from a prepared workspace, or on site at the client's premises (meeting room, studio, office) when requested. MICE interpreting often combines both: online preparation meetings with an incoming delegation, then on-the-ground interpreting once the group arrives in Vietnam.
Which Platforms Work?
Most AKT Translation clients use Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. On these platforms the interpreter joins as a participant, and the organiser configures how listeners receive the interpretation. If you are undecided between the two most popular platforms Zoom vs teams: Best choice for interpretation? to help you choose the best one for interpreting.
Some overseas companies run their own meeting platforms. In that case AKT Translation works on the client's platform after a connection test, so the client never has to change tools for the interpreter. This is useful when a foreign company needs interpreters based in Vietnam for its meetings, training sessions or shareholder events.
Interpretation features differ by plan and version, so confirm with your organiser before the day rather than assuming.

How AKT Translation Works
The process is short and the same every time:
- Enquiry: you contact us by phone, message or email. We agree hours, format, language pair, platform, and whether the interpreter works remotely or at your premises.
- Materials: you send the agenda, slides and a glossary if you have one. This step decides quality, especially for technical subjects.
- Platform check: we confirm that the organiser and listeners know how to use the platform and select the language channel, and run a connection test if needed.
- Preparation and rehearsal: the interpreter studies the materials, prepares terminology and tests audio.
- Delivery: if a line or audio problem occurs, the interpreter works with your team on the spot to fix it without long interruptions.
- Close: invoice and payment.
Technical Set-up and Backup
AKT Translation interpreters work from a quiet, dedicated workspace with professional headsets. Each position has a spare computer ready to swap in if the main machine fails. The main connection is a wired LAN line, with a 4G backup. When a client asks, the interpreter works at the client's own premises.
These details sound small, but they are why most sessions run smoothly. In online interpreting, quality assurance is not a promise; it is having the replacement ready before anything goes wrong.
On the client's side, a few habits help: a dedicated microphone or headset for each speaker instead of a laptop mic in a noisy room, speaking in turns rather than over each other, sending materials in advance, and letting the interpreter join early to check the audio. If the event involves both an in-person venue and online participants, the articles Key requirements for successful hybrid interpreting? and Equipment setup for hybrid events online and in person interpretation delve into the specific equipment details for each aspect.
What Affects the Cost of Online Interpreting?
Quality is assured and our rates are reasonable. Cost depends on the interpreting mode (consecutive or simultaneous), language pair, how technical the subject is, duration, number of interpreters needed, and whether the work is remote or at your premises. Send us your agenda and we will prepare a tailored quote.
For Event Organisers and Agencies
Event organisers, PCOs, DMCs and MICE agencies planning corporate delegations, business missions or study tours often need a local interpreting partner for the Vietnam leg, whether the delegation meets online beforehand or on the ground. AKT Translation supports organisers and language service provider partners across the region, including Singapore, with English, Chinese and Japanese into and out of Vietnamese teams for online, on-site and hybrid sessions, briefing and rehearsal with your production team, and a tailored quote built from your agenda.
Chinese and Japanese Remote Interpreters
Besides English, AKT Translation provides a Chinese Vietnamese remote interpreter and a Japanese Vietnamese remote interpreter on request. The process, platforms and pricing logic are the same; send the agenda and we will advise on the right format.
The Team Behind Our Online Sessions
Every online session is delivered by named interpreters, not an anonymous freelancer pool. Khang Nguyen, Lead Interpreter with more than 25 years in conference interpreting, coordinates remote assignments and works the booth himself, including the opening of a training-of-trainers programme at SIHUB where the EU Delegation and GGGI spoke via Microsoft Teams. Khang Nguyen and Thinh covered a workshop co-hosted by the HCMC Department of Construction and UNDP, with a UNDP expert presenting and taking questions over two-way Zoom.

Nhan and Suong, two experienced AKT Translation interpreters, handled a two-way Zoom session with an FAO expert at VIETFISH, interpreting at SECC in the middle of an expo sharing one network. Our interpreters are used to rendering speech and managing language channels at the same time, so organisers can focus on the programme.

Online Interpreting FAQs
1. Is online interpreting as accurate as on-site interpreting?
It can reach the same quality when properly prepared: good audio, materials sent in advance and an interpreter experienced with the platform. The difference lies in technical conditions rather than language, which is why AKT Translation always tests the connection and keeps backup in place.
2. Can you interpret on Zoom, Teams and Google Meet?
Yes. These are the three platforms we use most. If your company runs its own platform, we work on it after a connection test.
3. Do you offer Chinese and Japanese remote interpreting?
Yes. AKT Translation provides online English–Vietnamese, Chinese–Vietnamese and Japanese–Vietnamese interpreting, arranged to the needs of each meeting.
4. How do event organisers book an interpreter in Vietnam for an online or hybrid session?
Send the agenda, expected duration, platform and language pair. We confirm the format, agree a briefing and rehearsal with your production team, and issue a tailored quote. The same process works whether the session is online, on site or hybrid.
5. How much does online interpreting cost?
Our rates are reasonable and depend on the mode, language pair, subject, duration, number of interpreters and location. Send your agenda to AKT Translation for a tailored quote.
