Teams interpretation means delivering a speaker who joins via Microsoft Teams to listeners in another language, either through Teams' built-in interpretation feature or through an interpreting booth in the venue. This article shares a training-of-trainers opening at SIHUB, compares both setups and answers common questions.

Interpreting at SIHUB: Remote Speakers on Teams, a Hall Listening in Vietnamese

A speaker from the EU Delegation on a Teams screen. More than 100 university lecturers in the SIHUB hall waiting to hear Vietnamese. Between them: my booth, a laptop and a mixing desk.

It was the opening of the third cohort of a training-of-trainers programme on energy-efficiency startups at SIHUB, the Startup and Innovation Hub of Ho Chi Minh City. The project is led by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, funded by the EU and co-funded by GGGI. Representatives of the EU Delegation and GGGI Vietnam gave their opening remarks remotely via Teams, and I worked the booth alone: one-way, English into Vietnamese for the hall.

One-way sounds easy. Some venues simply put the Teams laptop inside the booth and let the interpreter listen from it, and the audience can end up missing words. At SIHUB, the laptop fed a mixer first, so the booth received a clean signal through headphones. The real skill sits at that mixer: Teams audio goes to both the hall speakers and the booth, and one wrong setting gives you feedback or an echo loop.

Both speeches were written texts read at pace, and the MC script switched between Vietnamese and English, so the MC and I agreed beforehand who covered which lines.

Remote interpreting for a live hall is about the whole audio chain, not just the microphone in the booth.

Teams Interpretation Feature or In-Room Booth: Which Does Your Event Need?

According to Microsoft's support documentation, Microsoft Teams includes Language interpretation for scheduled meetings, channel meetings and webinars. The organiser assigns interpreters across up to 16 language pairs, and attendees choose their channel and balance original and interpreted audio. Interpreters must use the Teams desktop app, recordings capture only the original audio, and the feature is not available in breakout rooms.

Teams interpretation feature In-room interpreting booth
Who needs the interpretation Online attendees The audience in the hall
Where the interpreter works At a computer running Teams In a booth, listening on headphones
Key equipment Teams desktop app, stable connection Mixer, booth, receivers and headsets
Typical risks Dropped connection, wrong channel Feedback and echo from poor audio settings

When both the hall and online attendees need interpretation, the interpreted audio has to reach both at once, and that is where the audio plan needs the most care. If your next event has a speaker joining via Teams, AKT Translation can help you choose the right setup from the planning stage.

ToT Interpreting: What Training-of-Trainers Programmes Need

Training of Trainers (ToT) is a model in which experts train a group of trainers, who then teach their own learners. The US CDC describes it as a way for master trainers to coach new or less experienced trainers; in corporate learning it is often called Train the Trainer. According to the organisers' programme, the course in this story ran for five days across three tracks (industry, buildings and transport), with negotiation role-plays and final project presentations.

In ToT interpreting, the learners are trainers themselves. They will reuse the terminology and examples to teach others, so a term rendered on day one must stay consistent until the last day. Multi-day programmes also mix lectures, group work and practice, so the mode can shift between simultaneous and consecutive from session to session.

Teams Interpretation FAQs

Does Microsoft Teams have an interpretation feature?

Yes. According to Microsoft, Teams offers Language interpretation for scheduled meetings, channel meetings and webinars. The organiser assigns interpreters and language pairs, up to 16 pairs, and attendees choose the language they want to hear. Interpreters need the Teams desktop app.

How much does online interpreting cost?

Cost depends on the mode (simultaneous or consecutive), duration, language pair, subject complexity, one-way or two-way setup, and whether in-venue audio coordination is needed. Longer simultaneous sessions usually require two interpreters taking turns. Send your agenda and event duration to AKT Translation for a tailored quote.

How do you prepare for a speaker presenting via Teams?

Share slides or the speech in advance if available, agree who holds the Teams host role, have the speaker join early for a sound check, use a wired connection for the Teams computer, and plan a fallback in case the speaker drops off mid-session.
