Tech Event Interpreting: When the Speaker Drops the Script

Opening Day at the HP Flagship Store: Interpreting Without a Script
No script on stage. Two-way English–Vietnamese. Then a walking tour through a store buzzing with opening-day music.
That was my morning interpreting consecutively for HP Chief Operating Officer Dave McQuarrie at the opening of the HP Flagship Store, a shop-in-shop technology space inside a Mobile World store in Ho Chi Minh City.
Dave glanced at a few bullet points, then spoke freely. An interpreter who clings to the prepared text gets lost within minutes. So I set the script aside and followed the speaker. Interpret the person talking, not the paper in your hand.

Then the CEO of DMX took the mic, Vietnamese into English, also off-script. One point stayed with me: young people want a space to experience the latest technology, not just a place to buy it. That is exactly what a shop-in-shop is for.
The store tour was the real test. Music, crowds, half-heard sentences, and no way to take notes while walking. That's where years of tech interpreting pay off, from Google Play Games' "App Design with AI" workshop to AI and IoT conferences.

I'd planned to wear a tie, but Dave was as down-to-earth as they come, so I took it off. It was his first visit to Vietnam, and he shook my hand more than once: "You did a good job, Khang." That meant a lot.
How do you prepare for a speaker who won't stick to the script?

Why Consecutive Interpreting Fits Store Openings and Product Launches
Consecutive interpreting is a mode in which the speaker pauses after each segment and the interpreter renders it into the other language. It requires no booth or headsets, which makes it the default choice for ceremonies, short speeches and site tours.
According to HP's press release, HP Vietnam and Dien May Xanh Investment JSC (DMX) opened the HP Flagship Store at Mobile World Luxury Store in Ho Chi Minh City. It is the second space built on the shop-in-shop model, where customers can try AI PCs first-hand.
An opening ceremony moves through several spaces: the welcome gate, the ribbon cutting, the stage and the store floor. Guests stand and walk throughout, so a simultaneous interpreting booth is both costly and impractical. Instead, the interpreter stands next to the speaker and shares the venue's sound system. However, one planning point is often missed: consecutive interpreting nearly doubles the length of each speech, so organizers must build that time into the run-of-show.
If your launch event features international executives on stage, AKT Translation can advise on the right interpreting format from the moment you draft the program.
Retail Tech Terms Interpreters Must Get Right
Brand language in retail technology is precise, and small slips change what a product promises. The interpreting notes below reflect AKT Translation's experience.
| Term | Vietnamese | What it means | Interpreting note |
| AI PC | Máy tính AI | A personal computer with a dedicated AI processor (NPU) that runs AI tasks on the device rather than relying entirely on the cloud. | "Máy tính AI" is clear for general audiences; keep "AI PC" when it appears on the backdrop or product materials. |
| AI-enabled | Tích hợp AI | A device or software with built-in AI features, including cloud-based ones. | Not the same as an AI PC; keep the distinction. |
| AI-ready | Sẵn sàng cho AI | Hardware powerful enough to run AI applications, even if none are pre-installed. | Merging all three into "máy tính AI" misstates the product promise. |
| Flagship Store | Cửa hàng chủ lực của thương hiệu | The brand's showcase store with its fullest product range. | "Cửa hàng hàng đầu" can sound like a ranking; keep "HP Flagship Store" as a proper name. |
| Retail touchpoint | Điểm chạm bán lẻ | Any point where a brand meets customers in store, such as demo counters or advisors. | "Điểm chạm" is established marketing vocabulary in Vietnam and appears in HP's Vietnamese press release. |
AKT Translation at Technology Events
The AKT Translation team has supported a range of technology events. These include the launch of the book "Internet of Things in Enterprise" by Cisco and Alpha Books, focused on IoT strategy for businesses, and the inauguration of Saigon Innovation Hub (SIHUB), Ho Chi Minh City's startup and innovation center. Each event brings its own vocabulary and pacing; the common requirement is a program that runs smoothly.
Tech Event Interpreting FAQ
What is the difference between consecutive and simultaneous interpreting?
In consecutive interpreting, the speaker talks in segments and the interpreter follows after each pause, with no equipment needed; it suits short speeches, meetings and tours. In simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter speaks almost in real time from a booth through headsets; it suits long conferences with many speakers and keeps the program on schedule.
How much does an English–Vietnamese event interpreter cost?
The cost of an English–Vietnamese interpreter depends on the mode (consecutive or simultaneous), duration (half day or full day), subject complexity, speaker level and equipment needs. For an accurate figure, send your agenda and expected duration to AKT Translation for a tailored quote.
How should you prepare an interpreter before an event?
Share the agenda, speeches (even drafts or bullet points), the list of guest names and titles, and product materials with model names in advance. If possible, arrange a few minutes with the speaker beforehand and provide the interpreter with a dedicated microphone.
