Interpreting at the workshop “OECD Due Diligence to Address Agricultural Supply Chain Risks”

2020/05/18

The training workshop "OECD Due Diligence to Address Agricultural Supply Chain Risks" was organized by the Vietnam Cooperative Alliances in collaboration with the International Labor Organization in Vietnam and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

It is compulsory for interpreters to be fluent and confident when performing at general meetings or special majors.

The training workshop sought to discuss how the OCED-FAO Guide to Responsible Agricultural Supply Chains could be applied throughout the entire supply chain. OECD recommends that companies perform risk-based due diligence to prevent and address risks that have occurred throughout the entire supply chain.

This job requires interpreters to be very good at analytics and to have a deep knowledge of the majors; they must also never stop studying and updating their knowledge in order to perform their job for the best results.

According to Shivani Kannabhiran, OECD Agriculture Sector Leader and Policy Advisor on Responsible Business Conduct, it was recommended that Vietnam's cooperatives and agricultural organizations adopt a five-step OECD-FAO framework to identify, assess, mitigate, prevent and address actual and potential adverse effects. Five steps include: Establishing strong enterprise management systems – Identifying, assessing and prioritizing risks in the supply chain – Designing and implementing a strategy to respond to identified risks – Verifying due diligence in the supply chain – Reporting on due diligence in the supply chain. The OECD due diligence approach can be of benefit to all concerned.

Terminology in specific majors is the typical barrier for translators and a crucial obstacle to interpreters. Translators and interpreters must be well-prepared and well-equipped and thorough to some extent so that they can manage their tasks well.

The workshop served as a good opportunity for delegates and representatives from various organizations to step up efforts to minimize risks and use leverage in the supply chain, to take proactive steps in the time international economic integration accelerates dynamically and to expand into global markets.
