CONFERENCE ON AGRO, FORESTRY AND FISHERY INDUSTRY, AND EU-VIETNAM FREE TRADE AGREEMENT

2020/08/02

After months, the Vietnamese economy began to show signs of activities, and Phien Dich Vien by AKT was asked to interpret for a number of conferences held to revive tourism, exports, aviation, and more.

Quick response has allowed Vietnam to be ready. In a time of uncertainty, it is important for Vietnam to play to its strength and take full advantage of all the opportunities.

The name says it all. The theme of the conference, “Supporting businesses to take advantage of opportunities to export agro, forestry and fishery products to the EU market, and effectively implementing EVFTA” certainly (http://trungtamwto.vn/fta/199-viet-nam--eu-evfta/1) accentuates Vietnam’s key industries and opportunities to lift the relationship with the world’s largest economy.

Agro, Forestry, and Fishery is a long phrase to say, therefore I turned it into a short form: AFF, to be efficient in using the limited time allowed for the interpreters.

IUU Fishing (http://www.fao.org/iuu-fishing/background/what-is-iuu-fishing/en/), chemical residues, and more were included in the agenda.

Before the event, I listed all the names of VVIP guests, representatives of MOIT (Ministry of Industry and trade), MARD (Ministry of Agriculture and  Rural Development), Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, with their titles to address them properly.

“New-generation Free Trade Agreement (FTA)” concludes broad and comprehensive commitments. While still including free trade in goods and services such as near complete removal of tariff barriers, reduction of non-tariff barriers like “traditional FTA”, new-generation FTA also covers “non-traditional” areas, for example, access to Vietnamese public procurement, improved access to Vietnamese services market, investment protection, sustainable development (commitments to implement International Labour Organization core standards and UN conventions).

Terms like NTB (non-tariff barriers), TBT (Technical Barriers to Trade), SPS (Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures) require thorough preparation by interpreters to reproduce messages precisely in the target language.

The European Commission has described the FTA as the most ambitious free trade deal ever concluded with a developing country. Content of the agreement includes national treatment and market access for goods; trade remedies; customs and trade facilitation, technical barriers to trade; sanitary and phytosanitary measures; non-tariff barriers to trade and investment in renewable energy generation; liberalization of investment, trade in services and electronic commerce; SOE, enterprises granted special rights or privileges, and designated monopolies; intellectual property; trade and sustainable development; transparency; dispute settlement; cooperation, and capacity building.

Once my team of English - Vietnamese interpreters and I have organized the technical words, acronyms and abbreviations, and comprehend the meaning, then even if presentation slides deliver a half of what speakers actually address,  our reliable interpreters can successfully convey the message to the audience.
