Khang Nguyen on His 20-Year Journey in the Interpreting Profession

With two decades of experience, interpreter Khang Nguyen shares insights into his mission as a "language bridge," offering a clearer perspective on the field for young people who are genuinely passionate and interested.

For an Interpreter, Going to Work is Going to School

Entering the field in 1999, when interpreting was not yet considered a formal discipline in universities, Khang Nguyen quickly recognized the importance of cultivating knowledge to interpret across multiple domains. Consequently, he has persistently honed his knowledge daily in both English and Vietnamese. Because interpreting bridges two languages, proficiency in only one prevents the effective expression of ideas. Notably, this isn't just about specialized linguistic knowledge but also encompasses expertise in economics, politics, society, technology, and management. This dedication has enabled Khang Nguyen to easily meet the demands of clients from various specializations and build a strong reputation for himself in the translation world.

"The work of an interpreter is incredibly demanding, requiring extensive knowledge, skills, physical stamina, and the ability to handle high pressure. Despite the challenges, I've always cherished this profession because it has given me the opportunity to grow personally and interact with clients from every sector," shares interpreter Khang Nguyen. Over his 20-year career, he has amassed some impressive figures: over 3,000 successful events, more than 20,000 interpreting hours for over 25,000 speakers. His client roster features renowned names like Google, Yahoo, Facebook, TikTok, Intel, IBM, VISA, Mastercard, Oracle, Microsoft, and CISCO; major organizations such as UNDP, UNICEF, IUCN, GIZ, WWF, IFC, and the World Bank; furthermore, he has had the honor of contributing to significant events organized by government departments and ministries, including the Department of Tourism, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Transport, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), the State Bank of Vietnam, and various consulates and embassies.

Whenever he sees his image at important events in the media or witnesses the real-world results of his work, interpreter Khang Nguyen says he feels immense pride and a renewed motivation to raise the bar even higher.

Continuously Innovating, Even After Achieving Success

During the challenging period of social distancing, new forms of interpreting emerged, such as online interpreting, interpreting via Zoom/Teams/WebEx, and teleconference interpreting. Khang Nguyen notes that his company's team of experienced interpreters quickly adapted, getting up to speed with and perfecting their online interpreting skills to ensure the success of hundreds of meetings, successfully connecting thousands of clients from anywhere in the world. For clients unfamiliar with these online formats, Khang Nguyen's team provides dedicated consultation on how to execute seamless and smooth hybrid (online and in-person) conferences.

The Ultimate Goal is the Client's Success

While most professions focus on personal or collective success, the work of an interpreter prioritizes the client's success above all else. Sharing his thoughts on this interesting aspect, Khang Nguyen explains: "When you interpret, you become the representative of the client's voice, carrying their message to others. Therefore, the client must succeed, and their objectives must be met, for our job to be complete. After many years in the profession, I've come to demand even more of myself. Instead of just completing the task, I always leverage my experience and knowledge to help make the client's message more powerful and more effective."

Despite being acknowledged, Master Khang Nguyen has never been complacent. For him, there is no 'best interpreter,' only an interpreter who gets better every day. He views the satisfaction of his clients and students as both a gift and the driving force that helps him press on toward even more brilliant milestones in the future.
