Khang Nguyen Shares the 'Golden Rules' of Interpreting and Translation

(VTC News) - Renowned for his role as a bilingual cabin interpreter at numerous major international conferences, interpreter Khang Nguyen offers valuable insights into the field.

Unlike many, interpreter Khang Nguyen sees the work of interpreting through a lens that goes beyond mere language. According to him, if mastering linguistic expertise is a prerequisite, then the cultural and human experiences accumulated by the interpreter are what truly seal the deal, enabling them to weave translations that are perfectly suited to the context and content of the speech.

Stemming from this perspective, throughout his journey as a "language bridge," interpreter Khang Nguyen has relentlessly cultivated his knowledge and life experience in various ways. To ensure the words he translates are not just "empty shells of language," he always goes the extra mile to converse with partners, seeking to understand the layers of meaning they wish to convey in each conference. He is meticulous in reviewing documents related to the client's event.

Furthermore, a deep understanding of culture—of the country, its people, lifestyle, habits, and customs—is one of the key elements that has defined his professional interpreting journey.

"A skilled interpreter must be proficient not only in English but also in Vietnamese to effectively perform both English-to-Vietnamese and Vietnamese-to-English interpreting," he shares.

Khang Nguyen notes that, thanks to over 20 years of interpreting experience, especially in conference interpreting (cabin interpreting) where the pace of "chasing" along with the talks is measured in seconds, he has discovered the diversity and flexibility of the Vietnamese language across various contexts with its many layers of metaphorical meaning.

Therefore, he believes that understanding and adeptly using one's native language is an essential asset for embarking on the journey of a professional "language ambassador."

Thanks to his dedicated pursuit of his passion for translation and the right guiding principles, he has become one of the few highly successful interpreters in Ho Chi Minh City. Additionally, he is the founder and curriculum designer for the basic to advanced translation and interpreting skills programs at the AKT Translation Training, and has pioneered the integration of the C2C (Conferences to Classrooms) method into the interpreting curriculum there.

With his formal pedagogical training and over 20 years of experience in international conference interpreting, he has combined and selected the most refined elements to instruct students through practical lessons that can be immediately applied to their current work.

In the future, he plans to continue developing his YouTube channel, Phien Dich Vien by AKT - Interpreter Vietnam, along with his online teaching platform and classes at the AKT Translation and Interpreting Training Center. He aims to level up the support available to young people who are passionate about pursuing a path in translation and interpreting, as well as those who need this skill set for language-related professions.
