CONFERENCE ON DEVELOPMENT OF TOURISM LINKAGES IN VIETNAM’S SOUTHEAST REGION

The conference on the development of tourism linkages in Vietnam’s Southeast Region was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City’s Central Party Committee – Nguyen Thien Nhan, Chairmen of People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City and five Southeast Provinces.

The conference sought to facilitate the growth of the tourism industry in the Southeast region by engaging with Ho Chi Minh City and explore ways to lend more weight to the role that travel agencies and tourism companies play in building tourism programs and products.

Preparation is the key to calm anxiety before any interpretation assignment. It makes all the differences if organizers provide a complete set of documents ahead of time. However, the strategy applied by an experienced interpreter would be as follows:

1. First and foremost, upon receiving the texts, I would take time to study all these papers in depth and take careful notes. This step allows interpreters to be more active, especially in an “unexpected situation” where speakers rely solely on keywords to address the subject matters.

2. Next, write down as much terminology as you can, of course, in both languages. And do not let your fear of wasting time cause you to waste time, it takes as long as it takes.

3. Now, sit down (or in whatever positions you prefer!), close your eyes, and rehearse the texts. Make an educated guess, in the span of 15 minutes, on the content that speakers would address. 

4. Then it is time. Often (in fact almost always), the speakers do not stick to the written texts. In this conference, one speaker quoted lyrics from songs. Song translation is not an easy task, not to mention doing it in real-time.

5. Finally, enjoy it when it lasts.
