CBAM: The Green Passport to the EU & Language Expert AKT Translation

2025/08/22

The European Union (EU) market has long been known for its "demanding" nature, with stringent environmental regulations mandating "green, clean, and beautiful" standards. With landmark initiatives like the European Green Deal and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the EU is pioneering the global shift towards a sustainable economy. These changes present both golden opportunities and significant challenges for Vietnamese businesses aspiring to penetrate or expand their share in the EU market.

Here, the seamless blend of the "intellectual prowess" of AKT Translation's team of interpreters and the "power" of technology—from soundproof booths and specialized headsets to advanced signal transmission systems—has become a golden formula, weaving success for high-profile clients. We are proud to have been, and to continue, delivering these outstanding values for many years to come.

To help pave the way for smoother "green exports," the Green Growth Sector Committee (GGSC) of the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (EuroCham), in collaboration with the Investment and Trade Promotion Centre of Ho Chi Minh City (ITPC), organized a training workshop themed "CBAM Compliance: The Path to Green Exports to the European Market."

Why Do Vietnamese Businesses Need to Pay Attention to CBAM?

What "secret" does this Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) hold that requires the attention of Vietnamese businesses? In simple terms, CBAM applies to imported goods, with the primary goal of preventing "carbon leakage"—that is, industries "sidestepping" regulations by relocating production to countries with more lenient emission rules. This serves as a wake-up call, urging Vietnamese enterprises, especially key export champions, to rapidly "adopt a new approach" and transition to greener production models. CBAM compliance is not merely a duty to be fulfilled (more than just something nice to say), but also an opportunity to "burnish their competitive edge" and confidently enter demanding yet highly potential markets.

In such direction-setting and specialized events, ensuring that information is conveyed accurately and effectively is paramount to maintaining the "lifeblood" of the workshop. This is where professional interpreting teams come into play, and for AKT Translation, adeptly managing such specialized workshops, including providing expert conference translation, is a regular undertaking.

The 'Binding Ring' of Scope 3 and the Expertise of AKT Language Specialists

One of the critical technical "hurdles" mentioned at the workshop is the "GHG Protocol Scope 3"—a core requirement in CBAM reporting. It may sound dauntingly complex, but consider this: Scope 1 covers direct emissions from the company's own sources (like factory chimneys). Scope 2 encompasses indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heat, or cooling—akin to "neighbor-generated" emissions that one still has to account for. Scope 3, however, is far more encompassing, including all other indirect emissions throughout the company's entire value chain, from upstream to downstream – from raw material production to when the product reaches the consumer and even its end-of-life (incidentally, we might also need to consider Extended Producer Responsibility – EPR!). The term "scope" here clarifies the boundaries of greenhouse gas measurement. Mastering and complying with Scope 3 reporting is a crucial stepping stone for businesses to avoid being caught off guard by CBAM requirements.

The complexity of such technical content further demands precision in every word. And when work becomes familiar, success inevitably follows as a habit. It is for this reason that AKT Translation has been honored with the trust and confidence of clients in numerous high-caliber events, a testament to our reliable translation services.

The Green Roadmap: Not Just Technical, But Strategic

So, what kind of "action roadmap" do Vietnamese businesses need? The workshop proposed a "technical and strategic roadmap." This involves more than just itemizing carbon emission inventories and reporting; it entails strategic shifts in business models, supply chain management, and investment in green technology. Developing a clear roadmap is like having a guiding compass, helping businesses navigate each specific step: from a general "health check" (assessing the current situation), identifying "ailments to cure" (priority areas for improvement), to "prescribing remedies" (implementing emission reduction solutions) and optimizing processes.

Roundtable Dialogue: Demystifying CBAM

The roundtable discussion at the workshop was truly a "meeting of minds," bringing together experts from various fields to collectively "scrutinize" the evolving landscape of CBAM and the "tests" it poses for Vietnam. The discussion not only highlighted the challenging "turns" Vietnamese businesses must navigate but also revealed potential "doors of opportunity" when proactively "tuning into" the greening trend. The interaction among experts provided "gems of wisdom" and practical solutions for the business community.

Besides "demystifying complexities" for workshops, conferences, or roundtable discussions, AKT is also a familiar presence at press conferences for Embassies and Consulates, as well as providing interpreting at many other specialized industry events. The diversity of projects and clients, from those who approach us directly to professional event management companies, demonstrates AKT's capability in committing to quality across various types of language services, irrespective of the organizational format.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities on the Green Export Path

The event was not just an "update course" on one of the EU's most critical environmental policies, but also a dialogue forum. Consequently, Vietnamese businesses gained a clearer perspective, as if "illuminating the path forward," on the necessary actions to "navigate the CBAM challenge." This, in turn, opens up a broad avenue towards sustainable production and an enhanced position in the international "playing field." Thorough preparation and proactive adaptation—as the saying goes, "cut their coat according to their cloth"—will be the golden key helping Vietnamese businesses transform challenges into opportunities in this era of green trade. The professionalism and experience of teams like AKT Translation have significantly contributed to the overall success of important events, ensuring that speakers' messages, especially complex information about roadmaps and policies, are conveyed in their entirety to the audience, underscoring the value of our comprehensive translation and interpreting services.
