AKT Translation at Elevator Expo 2024

2025/04/11

Vietnam Elevator Expo 2024 hosted a successful "Elevators, Art, and Architecture" talkshow. This event, organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Vietnam Elevator Association, attracted significant attention from domestic and international experts. The talkshow focused on the fascinating interplay between smart elevator technology, green architecture principles, and the creative potential of installation art in modern architectural spaces.

Modern elevators are more than just a means of getting from point A to point B; they're an integral part of the overall interior design scheme, especially in high-end hotels and entertainment venues. Users expect a seamless transition between the elevator and the rest of the building’s design, so designers go to great lengths to ensure the elevator's aesthetics are on par with the surrounding space. In fact, creating a cohesive design is often paramount, and the client's personal touch is key to reflecting their unique style. It's not uncommon for designers to bend over backward to accommodate a client's vision, ensuring the elevator is a showstopper, not an afterthought. Finally, making the elevator a stylish extension of the hotel itself helps to set the stage for a truly luxurious experience; and it's a win-win for everyone involved.

Key speakers included Architect Nguyen Van Tat, Vice President of the Architectural Council, Vietnam Architects Association, Mr. Zhang Lexiang, Secretary-General of the China Elevator Association, and Mr. Nguyen Hai Duc, President of the Vietnam Elevator Association. Presentations offered diverse perspectives on elevator design, the impact of elevators on property value, and global elevator market trends. The talkshow was a resounding success, creating a vibrant forum for the exchange of expertise and in-depth knowledge.

The elevator's origins can be traced back to simple lifting devices invented by Archimedes, the famous Greek scientist, around the 3rd century BC. These devices used human, animal, or water power to lift heavy objects, contributing to the construction of major ancient structures. Some believe these devices were even used in siege warfare, allowing soldiers to reach higher positions for better offensive advantages.

In 1743, the world's first elevator was built during King Louis XV's reign at Versailles, France. Known as the "flying chair," this suspended device was used to transport people, specifically serving the king's needs to move between floors. Some jokingly say he needed it to move between tower levels where his concubines lived, to... conserve energy (you can guess what for!).

The First Industrial Revolution, occurring in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, was a real game changer for the elevator industry. During this period, the invention of steam engines and hydraulic elevators enabled these devices to carry heavier loads, supporting the construction of tall buildings.

A landmark moment in elevator history came with Elisha Graves Otis's invention (the name sounds familiar!) of the safety brake system in 1853. Thanks to improvements in safety and efficiency, elevators were quickly installed widely in tall buildings like the Eiffel Tower. Without them, human civilization might have expanded horizontally rather than reaching for the stars - just think about climbing stairs during a power outage!

In 1880, Siemens (another familiar name!) successfully developed the first electric elevator, replacing the previous steam and hydraulic models.

Today, elevators have achieved significant advances in speed, safety, and convenience, becoming an indispensable part of modern life. According to Statista, the global elevator and escalator market reached approximately $85.2 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow to over $110.5 billion by 2028.
