Business Consultation on Transforming coffee & water use in Vietnam’s Central Highlands

2021/06/11

This is an article on Sustainability, Agricultural Production, and Environment.

On September 10th, 2020, IUCN, in cooperation with Vietnam Business for Environment (VB4E), hosted The Business Consultation on Transforming coffee and water use in Vietnam’s Central Highlands in Ho Chi Minh city. Along with the participation of IUCN’s Head of Indo-Burma Group and program coordinators in Vietnam, this event also welcomed experts and representatives from nearly 30 enterprises in the coffee industry.

The AKT team, one of the leading interpreting companies in Vietnam, is delighted to be, once again, trusted by customers as interpreters for this event.

Coffee is one of the main foreign currency earners, affirming Vietnam’s leading position in the world production map, especially as a Robusta producer. Export volumes peaked in 2018 at 30 million bags worth US$3.54 billion. However, as two sides of the same coin, there are drastic impacts on the environment in the Central Highlands, namely groundwater deficiency, prolonged droughts, subsidence, among others, which results in

productivity reduction and potential threat to the supply chain as the demand keeps uprising. In particular, more than 165,000 hectares of planting areas have been affected heavily by unproductive and irrational practices.

To tackle this issue, IUCN comes up with a more diverse and high-yielding model using less water. Experimented in Dak Lak, this demo farm replaces conventional monoculture practice with a mixed crop of coffee, pepper, durian, and avocado. Despite the enormous invested capital, amounting to US$ 300 million for 30 years, this drought-resilient model is proved to be capable of improving productivity by 2.5 times and saving up to 150 million cubic meters of irrigation water each year.

At the Seminar, IUCN also presents experimental results to businesses to gather opinions and thoughts on model feasibility. In addition, IUCN also looks for further cooperation from businesses to jointly revolutionize the coffee industry sustainably.

The AKT team has excellently delivered IUCN messages to all stakeholders and ensured an engaging and productive discussion session. Thank you for putting your trust in us and look forward to seeing AKT’s client-to-be in the upcoming events.
