English-Vietnamese Conference Interpretation for IFC Roundtable
"The Green Edge: Women's Employment and Leadership for Sustainable Business - Private Sector Roundtable" was organized by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, in collaboration with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
What makes this IFC report particularly significant?
The event brought together prestigious speakers from international organizations, government agencies, and businesses. Ms. Sarah Twigg, Regional Manager for Asia-Pacific, Gender and Inclusive Economics Group at IFC, emphasized that for IFC, Gender and Climate Change are both strategic priorities and cross-cutting factors in all organizational activities.
Ms. Franziska Deininger, Global Head of Climate and Inclusive Economics, presented detailed key findings from the report. The report indicates that women comprise only 23% of the workforce and 21% of senior management positions in the studied sectors, with particularly low representation in high-skilled STEM roles, especially in solar energy. However, the research also reveals that businesses in these sectors are facing severe talent shortages during the green transition - a real challenge that requires immediate attention.
Mr. Le Anh, Sustainability Director at DUYTAN Recycling, shared insights about the company's Plastic Collection & Recycling program, connecting multiple stakeholders in the plastic recycling value chain. He particularly emphasized women's role in this field - representing up to 85% of the informal waste collection workforce, yet only 21% of the formal plastic recycling industry workforce.
Dr. Nguyen Thu Hien, Advisory Board Member of the Vietnam Institute of Directors (VIOD), shared observations about women's participation at leadership levels (Board of Directors, Executive Management) and analyzed the benefits and opportunities that businesses can achieve by promoting women's participation in employment and leadership in Vietnam's green transition context.
Ms. Jessica Nga Tran of Clime Capital contributed an investor's perspective. She shared trends related to women's participation in renewable energy in Vietnam, particularly in solar energy, as well as how investors evaluate companies' diversity and gender inclusion practices when making investment decisions.
Additionally, the event featured Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan Ngoc from Veca, a pioneering startup in smart waste collection. Ms. Ngoc's story illustrates how digital technology and innovative business models can create positive environmental impact while improving women's workforce participation in plastic waste collection and recycling.
What skills are required for conference interpretation?
The discussion session on "Promoting women's participation in the private sector in Vietnam's green transition context" was lively with speakers from various fields. From the perspective of someone who has experienced senior management positions in business, AKT Translation understands client expectations when organizing events with foreign partners, especially when there are technical presentations like IFC's The Green Edge forum. The skills of coordinating pre-read knowledge and on-site information with speakers' presentation pace helped AKT successfully complete the work - this is where experience truly pays dividends.
Booth interpretation, also known as simultaneous interpretation, is a skill requiring high professional competency. Interpreters must not only be fluent in languages but also deeply understand specialized terminology and event context. In this forum, interpreters had to familiarize themselves with terms related to sustainable development, green transition, and gender equality such as "gender-smart solutions," "inclusive climate action," and "green-collar jobs."
Thanks to AKT Translation's high-quality booth interpretation services, speakers and participants could confidently communicate, share ideas, and discuss complex issues effectively, breaking through language barriers.
What solutions and recommendations were proposed?
The report and discussion offered many clear and practical recommendations for businesses. First is actively expanding recruitment of women into STEM and technical roles, promoting women's leadership through measurable targets and development programs. Next is developing sustainable and inclusive supply chains, and building respectful work environments that support all employees.
Industry leadership will be crucial in this effort. Pioneer companies are adopting innovative approaches - from digital platforms integrating informal female workers to targeted leadership programs aimed at building female talent pipelines. These examples demonstrate what's possible when businesses recognize that gender inclusion is not just the right thing to do, but the smart thing to do.
Speakers also discussed developing digital platforms to integrate informal female workers, building targeted leadership programs to develop female talent, and leveraging ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) financial opportunities for companies promoting women's participation.
The Economic Consul at the Australian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City emphasized the Australian government's commitment to promoting gender equality and climate action. He shared that the Australian government recognizes the connection between climate action and gender equality. This approach is reinforced by a fundamental principle: increasing investment in women's participation in low-carbon economies, focusing on creating equal economic opportunities for women in the green energy transition.
